Glossary

Aerate – To expose to the action or effect of air or to cause air to circulate through.

Bushy – Resembling a bush; thick and shaggy.

Climate – The composite or generally prevailing weather conditions of a region, as temperature, air pressure, humidity, precipitation, sunshine, cloudiness, and winds, throughout the year, averaged over a series of years.

Consume – To destroy or expend by use; use up. To eat or drink up; devour.

Deforestation – The clearing or severe thinning of a forest or other wooded area, leaving few or no trees.

Ecosystem – A system, or a group of interconnected elements, formed by the
interaction of a community of organisms with their environment.

Environment – Surrounding things, conditions, or influences.

Financial Gain – To get (something desired), especially as a result of one’s efforts.

Gnome – (In folklore) One of a species of diminutive beings, usually described as shriveled little old men, that inhabit the interior of the earth and act as guardians of its treasures.

Habitat – The natural environment of an organism; place that is natural for the life and growth of an organism.

Kneel – To go down or rest on the knees or a knee.

Nod – To make a slight, quick downward bending forward of the head, as in assent, greeting, or command.

Plop – To make a sound like that of something falling or dropping into water.

Prone – Having a natural inclination or tendency to something; disposed; liable.

Rodent – Belonging or pertaining to the gnawing or nibbling mammals of the order Rodentia, including the mice, squirrels, beavers, etc.

Slender – Having a circumference that is small in proportion to the height or length; thin or slight; light and graceful.

Species – The basic category of biological classification, composed of related individuals that resemble one another, can breed among themselves, but are not able to breed with members of another species.

Swoop – To sweep through the air, as a bird or a bat, especially down upon prey.

Tree Stump – The lower end of a tree or plant left after the main part falls or is cut off; a standing tree trunk from which the upper part and branches have been removed.

Underbelly – The lower abdomen; posterior ventral area, as of an animal’s body.

Whining – Complaining; fretful; cranky.
